TRAEX High School Senior College Safety Seminar

TRAEX High School Senior College Seminar

Research finds 82% of American college students are concerned about their personal safety (ADT, 2021).

The TRAEX Tactical Solutions LLC, High School Senior College Seminar aims to educate students regarding various safety concerns they will encounter during their transition to college and provide them with the knowledge and skills required to navigate those situations effectively.

The four-hour seminar (often taught in two, two-hour sessions over two days) discusses a myriad of topics ranging from safe daily practices while on campus and away at college, to the criminal mindset. Those attending will engage in discussions regarding personal safety and awareness, trusting instincts, situational awareness, and strategies for staying safe on campus and surrounding areas, to include but not limited to walking in well-lit areas, avoiding isolated locations, and using safe transportation options.

There will be discussions regarding alcohol and drug safety: This topic focuses on educating students about the risks associated with alcohol and drug use, responsible decision-making, and understanding consent. We will discuss alcohol poisoning, bystander intervention, recognizing signs of substance abuse, and strategies for safe partying or socializing. There will be an emphasis on fentanyl and the drugs’ pervasive impact on our society and college culture.  Additionally, the students will learn of the dangers of binge drinking, the risks of impaired judgment, and how to intervene if a friend or peer is in danger due to alcohol and drug use.

Cybersecurity and digital safety: Given the prevalence of technology in college life, this module educates students about protecting themselves online. Topics include creating strong passwords, recognizing, and avoiding phishing scams, and understanding the potential consequences of sharing personal information on social media. Students will also learn about the importance of maintaining a positive digital footprint and practicing responsible digital citizenship. They will receive education on protecting personal information online, recognizing scams and phishing attempts, and responsible social media use. The class will also discuss the impact of social media, and the impact of irresponsible posts, and how those may have an adverse effect post college and their future in the business world.

Fire safety and emergency preparedness: This section focuses on equipping students with knowledge about fire safety and emergency preparedness. Students learn about fire prevention measures, evacuation procedures, and how to use fire extinguishers. They will also be educated on emergency response protocols for various situations, such as severe weather or campus lockdowns.

Campus resources: Students may be introduced to the various campus resources available for safety, including campus security, counseling services, health clinics, and support groups. They may learn how to access these resources and understand the importance of utilizing them when needed.

This is a snapshot of many of the topics, but not all. The seminar will discuss much more, and allow the students to express their concerns, which will be addressed and discussed in a group environment.

The overall goal of the seminar is to empower students to make informed choices, develop resilience, and prioritize their safety and well-being as they navigate their college experience, and throughout their lives.
