USCCA Real Estate Agent Safety and Security Seminar

USCCA Real Esatate Agent Safety and Security Seminar

In many respects the real estate profession should be considered a high-risk occupation. Real Estate agents have no or limited formal training when they meet new clients for the first time, during open houses, or traveling from property to property in an unknown and on occasion unsafe neighborhoods. Agents must often meet strangers alone in vacant houses and show properties constantly exposed to risk, and in many instances an open target of criminals. Robbery, rape, and murder are not unheard of in this industry. In fact, agents are regularly reminded of the fact that fellow associates are attacked nationwide on a regular basis.

According to Bureau of Labor and Statistics, an estimated 75 real estate professionals have been killed each year since 2003. Many real estate agents have now resorted to carrying defensive weapons, such as tasers, pepper spray, and firearms when they meet potential clients, or in the seminar of their profession. Very few of those have little to no training to do so safely.

Considering these known and unknown risks there are steps real estate agents can take to help prevent being a target of violent assaults and being targeted by criminals. Being safe is often more than having the first-time meeting of a prospective client at the office or making a copy of their driver’s license. There are a myriad of techniques, processes and procedures that can be employed, by both the agent and brokerage company, to help ensure the safety of the agent, and the company, as well as their clients.
